Broad Street was overrun by thousands of Batman, Superman, Harley Quinn and Ninja Turtle impersonators Tuesday as the Town of Decatur celebrated Halloween with its annual Treat Street festival.
Mark Buntyn, president of Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce, which puts on the Treat Street event, said over 20 business and organizations signed up to pass out candy.
“We have our local fire department, our women’s club, the chamber,” he said. “I see Mississippi State across the way. A lot of organizations have a vested interest in Decatur and want to support our cause.”
Although Halloween was Wednesday, Buntyn said the chamber decided to move their festivities up a day to avoid conflicting with churches that hold Wednesday night services.
“We never celebrate Halloween on a Sunday or Wednesday,” he said.
And, he said, with sunny skies and warm temperatures, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.
“I tell people this is chamber weather,” he said.
Buntyn said Treat Street started about 10 years ago and has grown ever since. Decatur is a close-knit community, he said, so the trick-or-treat event gives residents a chance to catch up and have fun.
“It’s just a good two hours of our evening that we can meet and renew old friendships. It’s just a good festive time,” he said.
