SOFTBALL: County extends win streak

Newton County Lady Cougars won their fifth straight game with four wins this past week.

The Lady Cougars swept division foe Northeast Jones, winning 9-8 and 10-3. The Lady Cougars then travel to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and won two games in the West Harrison Tournament, beating Moss Point 12-2 and West Harrison 2-1.

TENNIS: Cougars win one of three matches

The Newton County tennis team got in plenty of action this week but dropped two out of three matches.

Newton County lost 5-2 to Northwest Rankin on Thursday before traveling to Jones County on Saturday where they split a pair of matches, beating Brookhaven 4-3 and losing to Stone County 4-3.

BASEBALL: County wins two of three games

Newton County came within one inning of winning the games last week.

After an 8-4 win over Southeast Lauderdale on Friday, the Cougars traveled to Meridian and lost 11-10 to Lamar on Saturday. The Cougars finished the week off Saturday night with an 11-7 win over East Webster.

BASEBALL: Late innings lift Cougars to win over Yellowjackets

After dropping a two-game series to South Jones to open the season, Newton County bounced back and grabbed its first win on Saturday.

County lost 8-5 to South Jones on Tuesday and 3-1 on Friday before beating in-county rival Union 8-5 on Saturday.
