It’s a pretty big deal when someone achieves a major milestone in their life. We love to celebrate those who get to their 80th birthday, the silver and golden anniversaries and the 50th class reunion along with others.
Getting to 100 years young
is an amazing feat in of itself, but one local woman has shattered that boundary. She’s now long past that and still going strong.
Geneva Sims, a Lake native and a current resident at Bedford Care Center of Newton, celebrated her 105th birthday on Sunday.
This past Friday, the nursing home had a big birthday bash for her, complete with cake, punch, family, friends and even a big surprise from Newton Mayor Murray Weems. To commemorate her 105th birthday, he gave her the key to the city.
While her voice might not be as strong as it used to be, she still enjoys singing with her brother, who’s a mere whippersnapper at 98 years old. I don’t know exactly what they do in their family, but they must be living right to have lived such a full life. Mrs. Geneva loves to fish, quilt and crochet, and she loves to spend time with her family and extended family at Bedford.
To put it in perspective, here’s one thing that happened on her birthday. The Ottoman Empire mobilized its European forces as a prelude to World War I.
Here’s an interesting thing. Three days before she was born, the first six-point touchdown was scored. Prior to that, a touchdown had been only scored as five points.
The Red Sox also won the World Series that fall, and that was the last year before the New York Yankees became an official franchise.
It’s incredible to see the change from then to now. I don’t know if I’ll make it to 105, but I hope that it will be lived as full as Mrs. Geneva has.
