Brent Maze: Good luck to spring sports teams

The Newton County Appeal is highlighting our local spring sports teams today with our annual Pitch Perfect section.

We are highlighting our local teams in Newton County and surrounding areas.

And just in time for the spring sports season, the weather has turned cold. Most of you who follow baseball, softball and other sports know that no matter what the winter has been like so far, the first day of the season is generally a return to cold.

That’s exactly what happened this year. We had a fairly mild winter, but last week it turned cold yet again.

I guess, I shouldn’t be complaining about it. At least local teams got to play. We’ve had so much rain recently that many of the games needed a dry day on Friday just to be able to play on Saturday.

And that doesn’t even include the fields across the state that may still be under water from flooding.

Rainouts are common this time of year, but I hope with all the rain we’ve received that we won’t have too many rainouts in coming weeks so that our local teams get a chance to play their full season.

Spring is already a condensed time of the year that if you cancel too many games, you won’t have time to make them up before the season ends.

Let’s hope the weather cooperates. And I’d like to wish all of our teams best wishes for the upcoming season!
