It seemed like yesterday that the summer was just beginning. Granted, summer came a little early this year. We skipped straight over the early summer days of temperatures around 90 and soared straight to the upper 90s and triple digits.
Now, that we are in the Neshoba County Fair time, this should be the days of upper 90s and 100s, but Monday actually felt more like Labor Day kind of weather as opposed to the Dog Days of Summer.
Maybe our weather patterns are adjusting to the school year, just like the rest of us. I guess it took two decades for the weather patterns to catch up to us.
Ever since my high school days, the school year is beginning earlier and earlier. I guess it’s about time the weather caught up too. Maybe that’s why it seems like our weather patterns are much different than they used to be.
I know I’m not the first person to talk about how early the school year seems to start. I’ve heard it from the Millenials to our senior citizens.
My birthday is Aug. 5, but school begins in Union on Aug. 6, which is also the date of the primary election. I never thought about having a birthday party in school because we always had at least three more weeks before school started. By the time I graduated, that school year was just a couple of days away from my birthday.
Many years, our first football game was played on the Thursday before school started. Other years, our first week of school was capped off by the first football game of the year. (Usually, that was Mortimer Jordan vs. Pleasant Grove.) Now, we’re usually about three weeks in before the football season starts.
Since everyone has adjusted, I guess it’s about time our climate did too. If that’s true, maybe the beginning of the school year will be cooler than it has been recently. Maybe we get a good cold front in by early September. Perhaps, we will have “football weather” for most of the season instead of playing with heat timeouts for nearly two-thirds of the season.
This is probably wishful thinking on my part, but one thing is for sure. The beginning of August is back-to-school time, and I don’t see that changing.
