Newton County voters will head to the polls March 10 to vote in the 2020 Primary Election. On the ballot will be candidates from President of the United States as well as races for the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
In primary elections voters must choose either the Democratic or Republican ballot when casting their votes.
In the race for U.S. House District 3, incumbent Michael Guest faces a primary challenge by James Tulp on the Republican ticket. On the Democrat ticket, voters will decide between Dorothy ‘Dot’ Benford and Katelyn Lee for their candidate in the November 3 general election.
Senator Cyndi Hyde-Smith is also running for re-election, with no primary challenger on the Republican ticket. On the Democratic side, three candidates, Mike Espy, who lost to Hyde-Smith in the 2018 election, Jensen Bohren and Tobey Bernard Bartee are vying to be the Democratic nominee to face Hyde-Smith in the general election.
Absentee voting for the primary election began Monday and will continue until the Saturday preceeding the election. A runoff election date, if needed, is set for March 31.
