A student at East Central Community College has been arrested and charged with sexual battery.
Ladetres Kirkland, 19, of Philadelphia was arrested Wednesday by East Central Community College Campus Police and booked into Newton County Jail.
He was initially charged with rape; however, the charge was updated Friday to sexual battery.
According to a statement from the college Friday, the alleged incident occurred last week in an on-campus dormitory.
“On Tuesday night, Nov. 5, 2019, East Central Community College was made aware of an alleged incident in an on-campus dormitory that reportedly occurred the previous week,” Maria McLeod, assistant to the Vice President for Public Information said via email. “College officials immediately conducted an investigation into the alleged incident. Based on the findings of the College’s investigation, this was an isolated incident and an appropriate charge was filed.”
Kirkland was released Thursday on a $20,000 bond.
