The Newton County School Board will be seeking bids to repair the roof and to clear out the Peavey building to begin the process of converting it to a usable space for the school district.
At its May 14 meeting, Superintendent J.O. Amis said they plan to bid out the roof project and the cleanup project in the Meridian Star and the Clarion-Ledger. The roof project includes sealing up skylights, which are the source of most of the roof leakage. For the building cleanup, he said they are planning to bid out the main part of the building, but they will also include an alternate to include the front part of the building.
Some of the plans for the use of the Peavey building include moving the county’s career-technical school from its current location on Hwy. 15 in front of the elementary school. That would then free up the building to be converted for additional uses.
The board also asked Amis to work with ECCC to see if they’d be willing to offer some dual-credit courses at the Peavey building once the building has been repaired and renovated for career-tech use.
Also in career-tech news, the school district is planning to add additional Keystone career paths that could allow juniors and seniors to earn college credit prior to high school graduation.
The school board also updated its middle school and high school discipline policies and handbook to make sure that the discipline policies reflect how they are currently handling any discipline issues. Amis said some of the handbook discipline procedures don’t exactly match the way they have been disciplining students.
The school board also accepted the resignations of several coaches within the district along with the retirement of several long-time employees. The personnel action was approved with a 3-1 vote with Jason Cain voting no because he wanted to handle the coaching changes in a separate motion.
