Whittle honored for retirement

BankFirst Community Bank President Doug Whittle was honored for his years of service during a retirement celebration Friday afternoon at the Newton downtown bank location. Whittle has been community bank president in Newton since BankFirst acquired Newton County Bank in 2015.

Lake girls beat Kemper for district

The Lake Lady Hornets defended their Division 5-2A championship last week by knocking off Kemper County in the tournament finals on Friday night.

The Lady Hornets finally took down senior-laden Kemper County and beat the Lady Wildcats 48-45 on Friday night to claim the 5-2A crown.

NCA girls head to state

The Newton County Academy Lady Generals qualified for the Class 3A state tournament last week.

The Lady Generals opened with a 48-30 win over Porter’s Chapel in the opening round game at Kemper Academy. NCA then lost 56-29 to Marvell and 38-37 to Greenville Christian to finish fourth in the tournament.
