Newton squads add one win each

Each Newton basketball team was able to pick up a win this past week.

The Tigers took a 67-61 win over Laurel on Monday and then lost 68-57 to Sumter Central on Friday.

The Lady Tigers lost 38-26 to Laurel on Monday and then beat Sumter 50-40 on Friday. They then lost 45-39 to Quitman on Saturday.

Generals open district play with important wins

The Newton County Academy basketball teams got a sweep to open district play last week.

The Lady Generals opened district play with a 54-21 blowout win over Kemper Academy while the Generals took a hard-fought 28-22 win over the Rams.

Starting strong in district

Newton County only got in one game last week and swept a pair of games from Mendenhall to open Division 5-4A play.

The Lady Cougars held on to take a 38-36 win while the Cougars took a 69-61 win.
