Lake coach Tate Hanna knows knew his team had to capitalize on every opportunity they had.
Unfortunately, the Hornets came up a little short on two red-zone possessions in the second half. That allowed Enterprise to break the tie and escape with an 18-12 victory in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
The Hornets end their season with an 8-3 record while the Bulldogs advance to the second round.
“We never really did stop them all night long,” Hanna said. “We got the ball inside the 5-yard line twice in the second half, and we came away with no points. You can’t do that in a game like this.”
Lake got on the board first, taking advantage of a bad Enterprise punt snap. Brady McGee capped off the opportunity with a short touchdown run, giving Lake a 6-0 lead.
Enterprise answered in the second quarter with two punishing drives on the ground and play-action passing. giving the Bulldogs a 12-6 lead.
The second drive, however, left too much time on the clock, as the Hornets drove the final two minutes of the half and scored on Zywon Ledbetter’s 50-yard touchdown pass from McGee. No extra points were good on either side.
Lake had two drives go inside the 5-yard line, but they ended on fourth down, one with an incompletion and the other with an interception in the end zone. From there, the Bulldogs drove 80 yards to take win.
