The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the area until 9 p.m.
Counties in the watch include Newton, Neshoba Scott, Smith, Leake, Jasper, Kemper and Lauderdale.
Tornadoes are possible throughout most of Mississippi along with chances the chance of storms with straight line winds of 70 mph and large hail up to golf ball size.
"The greatest threat for severe weather will be now through the early evening," according to a NWS statement. "Everyone needs to stay weather aware and have your severe weather plans in place today!"
