BASEBALL: Cougars split two-game series with Florence in district

The Newton County Cougars opened division play this past week with Florence in a spirited two-game series with the Eagles.

Newton County led in the first game but the Eagles scored four runs late to take a 7-6 win on Friday. Newton County returned the favor and overcame a 3-0 deficit to take a 5-3 win on Saturday and split the series.

TENNIS: Union netters split with Meridian, Neshoba Central

The Union tennis team got in a pair of matches last week, splitting with two of the area’s biggest schools.

Union lost 4-3 to Class 6A Meridian but then turned around and beat Class 5A Neshoba Central 4-3.

SOFTBALL: Lady Hornets add four more wins with sweep of Newton

The Lake Lady Hornets picked up four wins this week including a sweep of Newton on Saturday.

The Lady Hornets beat Newton 16-1 and 16-0 on Saturday. On Friday, Lake shut out Pisgah 14-0 and beat Kosciusko 7-6 on Monday.

BASEBALL: Union unable to follow up Buckley’s no-hitter with another win

It was another mixed week for the Union baseball team.

The Yellowjackets got a no-hitter from Jaylon Buckley in a 5-0 win over Sebastopol on Tuesday but then dropped an 11-5 decision to Enterprise on Saturday.
